Single-mode SFP module for 10 km links

The TRENDnet TEG-MGBS10D3 is a hot-pluggable SFP transceiver that adds a single-mode fiber uplink to any switch or router with a standard SFP slot. It targets network engineers extending campus or metro segments beyond copper limits without replacing existing switching gear. The module operates on a single 3.3 V supply and meets IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel specifications.

10 km reach on 1310/1550 nm wavelengths

The duplex LC interface transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, delivering a 1000Base-LX signal over single-mode fiber up to 10 km (6.2 miles). Headroom is adequate for most building-to-building or campus runs; the link budget will not support longer-haul or dense wavelength-division multiplexing applications that require amplified or coherent optics. Power dissipation remains low for dense chassis deployments.

Replaces fixed copper uplinks

This module upgrades a copper RJ-45 uplink when distance exceeds 100 m or when electromagnetic immunity is required. It also replaces 550 m multi-mode SFPs when the fiber plant is single-mode. The jump is worth it only when the far end uses the paired TEG-MGBS10D5 module or another compatible 1550/1310 nm single-mode transceiver; mismatched wavelengths will not link.
