40 km single-fiber converter

The TRENDnet TFC-1000S40D5 is a bi-directional media converter that links a 1000Base-T copper segment to a 1000Base-LX single-mode fibre run. It transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm over a single SC simplex connection. The unit is designed for network operators extending Gigabit Ethernet beyond copper limits.

Copper reach capped at 100 metres

The RJ-45 port follows IEEE 802.3ab and supports UTP Cat. 5 or 100-ohm STP cable up to 100 metres. The fibre port reaches 40 km on 10/125 µm single-mode fibre. Auto-negotiation and manual speed/duplex settings are selectable via DIP switch. Link Loss Carry Forward and Link Loss Return functions help maintain path awareness.

Must pair with TFC-1000S40D3

This converter only operates when paired with its wavelength-mirror counterpart, the TFC-1000S40D3. It replaces a direct copper run when distance exceeds 100 metres or when fibre infrastructure already exists. The jump is worth it for campus, metro or campus-style links needing managed SNMP visibility and chassis or wall-mount flexibility.

Questions about this item

Should I pick this 40km TX 1550nm RX 1310nm version or the matching TFC-1000S40D3?

This module transmits at 1550nm and receives at 1310nm; it must be paired with the TFC-1000S40D3 which uses the opposite wavelengths, so choose this side if your link plan assigns these wavelengths to this location.

What does the 40km distance mean when the converter is installed?

The single-mode SC simplex port supports up to 40km (24.85 miles) over 10/125µm fiber, while the RJ-45 copper port reaches 100m on Cat. 5 or better UTP/STP.

How does the SC single-fiber bi-directional interface limit speed and distance?

The SC port runs 1000Base-LX at 1Gbps full duplex over one strand up to 40km; the copper port runs 1000Base-T at 2000Mbps full duplex up to 100m.
