Long-Distance USB 3.2 Gen 1 Cable

The Tripp Lite U328F-15M is a 15 m active optical cable with USB-A to USB-B connectors. It carries USB 3.2 Gen 1 signals up to 5 Gbps over distances that standard copper cables cannot support. The plenum-rated CMP jacket allows installation in air ducts and drop ceilings. Power is drawn from the connected device for plug-and-play operation.

Replacing Copper USB Links

This cable replaces passive copper USB cables when the required run exceeds their reliable length limit. The fiber construction maintains signal integrity at 15 m without the bulk or signal loss of long copper assemblies. The upgrade is worth it when devices must be placed far from the host in commercial or structured-wiring environments. It is not for buyers who need a short desktop cable or a connection type other than USB-A to USB-B.

USB 3.2 Gen 1 Interface Limits

The link operates at USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds up to 5 Gbps, so throughput will not exceed that ceiling regardless of the host controller. The active optical design requires a powered USB port at each end to operate the transceivers. The fixed 15 m length cannot be shortened or extended by the user. The cable does not support alternate protocols or power-delivery profiles beyond the standard specification.

Questions about this item

What size conduit or pathway can the 49 ft plenum-rated cable fit through?

The CMP-rated jacket is designed for horizontal premise runs in air ducts and drop ceilings, so it fits standard plenum pathways used for low-voltage cabling.

How is the active optical cable installed, and what step do installers often miss?

Connect the USB-A end to the host and the USB-B end to the device; the cable draws power from the host for plug-and-play operation, so no external power adapter is needed.

What maintenance or replacement will the 15 m fiber AOC need over time?

The fiber construction eliminates electromagnetic interference and signal degradation typical of copper, so the cable requires no periodic maintenance or scheduled replacement.
