Outdoor Ethernet surge protector

The Ubiquiti Networks ETH-SP-G2 provides ESD protection for outdoor high-speed networks up to 1 Gbps. It uses two passive RJ45 female connectors to shield Power-over-Ethernet or non-PoE devices from damaging electrostatic discharge and surges. The unit mounts directly to a wall for a compact footprint of 3.58 by 2.40 by 1.28 inches and weighs 0.18 lb.

Upgrade from unprotected runs

Adding this suppressor protects outdoor access points, cameras or switches that currently have no inline surge defence. The jump is worth it when a lightning strike or static build-up could destroy PoE gear and interrupt a wireless link. It replaces a simple coupler or bare cable entry with a grounded barrier rated for 10/100/1000 Ethernet speeds.

Simple wall-mount install

Mount the white enclosure on a flat surface, connect the incoming cable to one RJ45 port and the device cable to the other, then attach the ground wire to a verified earth point. Common issues include forgetting the ground connection, which renders the protection ineffective, or reversing the protected and unprotected sides during cable routing. Ensure the unit is oriented so water cannot pool around the connectors.

Questions about this item

How do I mount the 3.58" x 2.40" x 1.28" unit to a wall?

The ETH-SP-G2 is designed for wall mounting; secure the housing with screws through its integrated mounting tabs, then connect the protected Ethernet cables to the two RJ45 ports.

What is the most common installation mistake with the two RJ45 surge-protected ports?

Connecting the outdoor cable to the equipment side instead of the line side leaves the device unprotected; always feed the incoming line into the port marked for line input.

When should the surge protector be replaced after a lightning event?

Replace the unit if the network link fails or shows errors after a surge, as the internal protection components sacrifice themselves and cannot be reset or serviced.
