1/2 in Schedule 40 Steel Pipe

This 3 ft black steel pipe has a nominal size of 1/2 in and an inside diameter of 39/64 in. It is manufactured to Schedule 40 dimensions with welded construction from Grade B steel. The pipe carries a black coating and is rated for a maximum operating pressure of 1715 psi at 650 Degrees F.

Thread Compatibility and Media

Both ends feature 1/2 in MNPT threads for Class 150 fitting compatibility. The pipe is approved for air, natural gas, non-potable water, oil and steam service. Operating temperature range spans -20 Degrees F to 600 Degrees F with a maximum steam pressure of 1715 psi.

Replaces Worn Black Pipe Runs

This length replaces corroded or leaking sections of 1/2 in Schedule 40 black pipe in existing distribution systems. The upgrade is worth it when the current pipe shows thread damage, internal scaling or wall thinning that compromises the 1715 psi rating. It is not for potable water lines or gravity-flow drainage installations.

Questions about this item

Does the pipe come with any fittings or thread sealant, or must I buy those separately?

The pipe is supplied as a single 3 ft length with male NPT threads on both ends; no couplings, nipples or thread sealant are included, so you will need to purchase compatible Class 150 fittings and sealant separately.

The catalogue shows only this 3 ft length — are other lengths available for the same 1/2 in nominal size?

Only the 3 ft TBE length is listed for this ZORO SELECT 583-360 model; if you need a different length you would have to source another pipe or cut and re-thread this one.

The pipe is rated 1715 psi at 650 °F — what does that mean for a standard residential steam system running at 15 psi?

The 1715 psi rating is the maximum design pressure at 650 °F; at typical low-pressure steam conditions of 15 psi the pipe wall is far below its stress limit, so the rating confirms ample safety margin for that service.
