17-1/2 Inch Hickory Replacement Handle

This Vaughan 64173 handle is a 17-1/2 inch hickory replacement designed for 2 to 4 lb hand drilling hammers. It fits a pear-shaped eye with a 9/16 inch width and 1-1/2 inch length opening. The handle is intended for heads weighing exactly 28 oz and includes steel and wood wedges for secure attachment.

Check hammer head weight and eye dimensions

Verify that your hammer head weighs exactly 28 oz before ordering. Confirm the eye shape is pear and measure the opening at 9/16 inch wide by 1-1/2 inch long. Ensure the tool is a hand drilling hammer within the 2 to 4 lb class so the handle length and fit are correct.

Included wedges simplify installation

The package supplies both steel and wood wedges required to lock the head onto the hickory shaft. No separate wedge purchase is needed, so the handle can be fitted immediately. The plain grip style means no extra finishing or shaping is required before use.

Questions about this item

Does the 64173 handle come with the wedges needed to fit the head, or must they be purchased separately?

The handle includes wedges for attaching the head, so no separate purchase is required.

How do I confirm the 17-1/2 inch hickory handle matches the eye on my Vaughan hatchet?

Check that your head has a pear-shaped eye measuring 9/16 inch wide by 1-1/2 inch long and weighs 28 oz, as this handle is made for those exact dimensions.

Will the 17-1/2 inch length change the swing balance on a 28 oz Vaughan head compared to the original handle?

The handle is designed for heads from 28 oz up to 4 lb, so a 28 oz head will balance as intended at this length.
