85mm f/5.6 Ultra Macro APO Lens

The Venus Laowa 85mm f/5.6 Ultra Macro APO Lens mounts on Canon RF mirrorless bodies and delivers 2x magnification for extreme close-up photography. Its apochromatic design uses 13 elements in 9 groups, including three ED glasses, to suppress chromatic aberration across the frame. Weighing 310 g, it remains compact enough for field work and travel.

Fixed f/5.6 maximum aperture limits low-light

The lens opens only to f/5.6 and stops down to f/22, so exposure control relies on shutter speed and ISO rather than a wider iris. Minimum focusing distance is 16.3 cm, giving a working distance that can restrict lighting placement for very small subjects. Angle of view on full frame is 28.55 degrees, which is narrower than general-purpose short telephotos.

Verify Canon RF mount compatibility

This lens is built exclusively for the Canon RF mount and will not fit EF, EF-S or other systems without an adapter. Manual focus operation requires a camera body that supports focus peaking or magnification aids for precise 2x composition. Buyers who need autofocus, image stabilisation or apertures wider than f/5.6 should consider other macro options.

Questions about this item

Which Canon RF bodies does this 85mm f/5.6 lens cover?

The lens is designed for full-frame Canon EOS R models and is listed as compatible with the EOS R10, EOS R50 and EOS R7.

What does the 2x magnification mean when shooting?

At the closest focus distance of 6.4 inches (16.3 cm) the lens reproduces subjects at twice life-size on the sensor.

How does the Canon RF mount affect aperture control?

The RF mount provides electronic aperture control from f/5.6 to f/22, so the camera body sets the f-stop.
