What this lens does

The Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO is a manual-focus prime for Nikon Z full-frame cameras. It delivers 2:1 magnification with a minimum focusing distance of 9.72 inches, letting macro photographers capture detail beyond life size while also focusing to infinity for portrait work.

Fitting and focusing

The lens mounts directly to the Nikon Z bayonet with no adapter required. Because focus is entirely manual, the smooth ring demands deliberate turns; users accustomed to autofocus should practise on static subjects first. The 13-blade diaphragm stays rounded across apertures, so bokeh remains clean even when stopping down.

The spec that decides fit

Maximum magnification is 2:1 at 100mm focal length with a constant f/2.8 aperture. If your work needs greater than life-size reproduction on a full-frame sensor without changing lenses, this focal length and magnification range match that requirement.

Questions about this item

How do I confirm the lens reaches 2:1 magnification on my Nikon Z body?

At the 9.72 inch minimum focusing distance the lens achieves 2:1 magnification; frame a ruler at that distance and the subject should fill half the frame width.

What accessories are included and which must be purchased separately?

The lens ships with front and rear caps; Nikon Z filter threads, hoods, tripod collars and any close-up filters are sold separately.

Should I choose the 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO over the 60mm 2:1 macro for portrait work?

The 100mm focal length gives a longer working distance and tighter field of view, which is generally preferred for portraits, while both reach 2:1 magnification.
