Extreme Macro Lens for Sony FE

The Venus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 is a manual-focus prime built for Sony full-frame E-mount cameras. It delivers a magnification range of 2.5x to 5x life-size, letting photographers capture details far beyond standard 1:1 macro lenses. The package includes a dedicated front LED ring light that mounts to the filter thread for subject illumination.

Compact Barrel with Integrated Lighting

The lens uses an 8-element, 6-group optical design that includes an extra-low dispersion element to control chromatic aberration. Its barrel is smaller and lighter than typical ultra-macro optics, which helps light reach the subject at close range. The supplied LED ring light draws power via USB and provides continuous output for focus stacking or video work without bulky external flashes.

Working Distance and Exposure Control

At 2.5x magnification the working distance is 45mm, falling to 40mm at 5x, giving enough room for the ring light to illuminate the subject evenly. Aperture is set manually on the lens barrel at f/2.8, so exposure changes are made by adjusting shutter speed, ISO or the LED brightness. The optical formula is optimised for corner-to-corner sharpness across the frame at these extreme magnifications.

What working distance does the lens provide at its minimum and mid-range magnifications?

At 2.5x magnification the working distance is 45 mm, and at 2x it is 40 mm, giving enough space for lighting and composition without crowding the subject.

How is the included front LED ring light powered and attached for macro work?

The ring light mounts on the lens front via its filter thread and draws power from a USB source, so you can run it from a camera grip, power bank, or wall adapter while shooting.
