Macro reach and purpose

The Venus Optics Laowa 58mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Nikon Z delivers 2x magnification with a minimum focusing distance of 7.28 inches, revealing fine textures that standard lenses cannot resolve. It covers a 40.9-degree angle of view on full-frame sensors and focuses from 2:1 magnification to infinity, making it useful for both close-up work and general photography.

Optical performance across the frame

An apochromatic design with three extra-low dispersion glasses and three Ultra-High Refractive Index elements minimises chromatic aberration in focused and defocused areas alike. The 13-blade aperture produces smooth, rounded bokeh from f/2.8 to f/22, giving consistent subject separation whether shooting wide open or stopped down for depth.

Upgrade path and limits

Photographers moving from a 1:1 macro lens gain twice the reproduction ratio without changing working distance drastically. The design is not suited for shooters who need autofocus, image stabilisation or a wider maximum aperture for low-light handheld use.

Questions about this item

How much heat does the 58mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens generate during extended shooting sessions?

This is a passive optical lens with no electronics or motor, so it produces no measurable heat during all-day use.

What camera body mount is required for the Laowa 58mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens to function?

The lens is built for the Nikon Z mount and will only attach to Z-series mirrorless bodies.

Will the 58mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens cover the full frame of my older Nikon F-mount DSLR via an adapter?

The optical formula covers a full-frame 40.9-degree angle of view, but the native Z mount requires an adapter for F-mount bodies, which may limit infinity focus or electronic communication.
