Adds RS485 and CAN bus to a Raspberry Pi via 40-pin header with SP3485, MCP2515 and SN65HVD230 transceivers plus TVS protection
This HAT connects to the standard 40-pin GPIO header on Raspberry Pi series boards. It adds RS485 and CAN interfaces for industrial or automation projects. The board is designed for makers who need reliable long-distance serial communication. It suits developers building edge devices that talk to sensors, actuators or PLCs.
The RS485 channel uses the SP3485 transceiver in half-duplex mode with automatic TX/RX control, so no extra code manages direction switching. The CAN channel runs through the MCP2515 controller on SPI with an SN65HVD230 transceiver. Onboard TVS diodes suppress surge and transient spikes on the RS485 lines, giving lightning-proof and anti-electrostatic protection during continuous operation.
This board replaces a tangle of separate modules and level shifters by putting both interfaces on one HAT. It upgrades a plain Raspberry Pi when the project demands industrial-grade serial buses instead of USB converters. The jump is worth it when you need deterministic CAN messaging and noise-immune RS485 runs without extra wiring or external power supplies.

The SP3485 is a low-power transceiver chip with no moving parts, so it runs silently and produces negligible heat during typical RS485 communication.
You need any Raspberry Pi model with a standard 40-pin GPIO header; the HAT plugs directly onto that header for power and signal connections.
Yes, the MCP2515 uses the SPI interface with reserved control pins, allowing it to coexist with other SPI devices on the same bus.
