USB-powered UV tube for glow effects

This Wennyn LED blacklight tube uses an E26 base and runs from any 5 V USB source such as a power bank, laptop or car outlet. A 110 V USB adaptor is also supplied. The 10 W fixture emits UV at 395-400 nm and is suited to bedrooms, posters, Halloween displays, glow-in-the-dark art and fluorescent mineral viewing in areas up to 200 sq ft.

Practical limits of USB power and UV wavelength

The tube draws a maximum of 10 W from a 5 V USB port, so the host must supply at least 2 A for full brightness. Output peaks at 395-400 nm, which excites common fluorescent materials but is less effective for short-wave UV applications such as germicidal work or professional forgery detection. The 180-degree beam covers a wide angle but intensity drops off beyond a few metres.

Simple mounting with two common pitfalls

Two screws and two clips are included for surface mounting; the 6 ft cord reaches most USB ports without an extension. Users sometimes forget that the in-line switch has two brightness levels and leave the tube on the lower setting. Others plug the tube into a low-current USB port such as a keyboard hub, which causes flicker or no start at all.
