Surveillance-class 4 TB storage
The WD Purple 4 TB hard drive is engineered for continuous 24/7 recording in mainstream surveillance systems. It uses AllFrame technology to optimise write-intensive, low bit-rate workloads with high stream counts. The drive is rated for up to 180 TB per year workload rate and supports up to 16 drive bays with tarnish-resistant components.
Upgrade from desktop drives
Standard desktop drives are built for intermittent use and can fail under the constant heat and vibration of an NVR environment. This drive replaces them when a system records multiple high-definition streams around the clock. The jump is worth it when frame loss during playback becomes unacceptable or when the array grows beyond eight bays.
Fits standard 3.5 inch SATA bays
The 3.5 inch form factor connects via a SATA interface and provides 256 MB of cache for buffering heavy write traffic. It requires a compatible NVR or server chassis with adequate cooling for always-on operation. The design frees the system from the reliability limits of consumer drives in multi-bay surveillance deployments.

Questions about this item
Does the 3.5 inch form factor fit a standard 3.5 inch drive bay or does it need an adapter?
The 3.5 inch form factor fits a standard 3.5 inch drive bay directly. No adapter is required for mounting.
What SATA cable and power connector are needed, and which step do builders often miss?
Connect a SATA data cable to the motherboard and a SATA power cable from the PSU. The step often missed is securing both connectors firmly so vibration does not unseat them.
When should the drive be replaced based on the 180 TB per year workload rating?
Replace the drive once the cumulative written data approaches the 180 TB per year workload rating to maintain reliable surveillance recording.
