  • 256 MB cache boosts data transfer speeds
  • SAS 12 Gbps interface for enterprise connectivity
  • 7200 RPM rotational speed enables fast data access

Enterprise 12 TB SAS drive

The Western Digital Ultrastar HC520 is a 12 TB internal hard drive built for enterprise storage arrays and data centres. Its 7200 RPM spindle and SAS interface deliver the throughput needed for cloud repositories, big-data workloads and high-capacity archiving.

Sustained workload behaviour

A helium-sealed design reduces internal turbulence, lowering power draw per terabyte by 54 % compared with 8 TB air-filled drives. Rotational-vibration safeguards and 256 MB cache keep sequential performance stable during long write streams and heavy multi-user access.

Build quality and connectivity

The 3.5-inch form factor fits standard drive bays and backplanes using a SAS connector. PMR recording on a field-proven fourth-generation platform adds 25 % more reliability, while the sealed helium chassis improves thermal consistency in dense rack deployments.

Questions about this item

How much heat does the 12TB 7200RPM SAS drive generate when running continuously?

The helium-sealed design reduces power consumption, delivering industry-leading power efficiency with 54% better watts-per-terabyte versus 8TB air drives.

What controller or backplane is needed to connect this SAS-12Gbps drive?

A 12Gbps SAS host bus adapter, RAID controller, or compatible backplane with SAS connectors is required for full-speed operation.

Will the HC520 work in a chassis built for earlier 3.5-inch enterprise drives?

Yes, it uses the standard 3.5-inch form factor and SAS interface, so it fits existing drive bays and caddies designed for previous-generation enterprise HDDs.
