WD Red Plus 8TB CMR NAS Drive

This 3.5-inch SATA hard drive uses conventional magnetic recording and a 256 MB cache to deliver reliable storage for network-attached systems. It spins at a 5400 RPM performance class and carries the WD Red Plus branding to distinguish it from SMR-based models.

Suited for multi-bay NAS up to eight bays

Designed for small to medium business and SOHO environments that run 24x7, the drive handles archiving, file sharing and RAID rebuilds on ZFS and similar file systems. Builders needing more than eight drive bays or a non-SATA interface should consider other solutions.

8TB capacity with 180 TB/yr workload rating

The drive comfortably manages annualised workloads up to 180 TB per year, calculated from actual power-on hours over 8760 hours. Capacities across the range extend to 14 TB for users who require more headroom within the same eight-bay limit.

Questions about this item

Which drive bays and SATA ports must my NAS already provide for this 3.5" 8TB WD Red Plus drive?

Your NAS needs a free 3.5-inch bay and a SATA 6 Gb/s port; the drive is built and tested for enclosures with up to eight bays.

Will this 5400 RPM CMR drive run reliably in a 24×7 NAS that currently uses older WD Red SMR drives?

Yes, the CMR technology and NASware firmware are designed for continuous operation alongside existing drives in multi-bay RAID or ZFS arrays.

How can I verify the drive is healthy after installing it in my NAS?

Check the NAS dashboard for SMART status, confirm the 256 MB cache is recognised, and monitor that annualised workload stays within the 180 TB/yr rating.
