Purpose-built surveillance storage

The WD Purple Pro WD240PURP is a 24 TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive engineered for always-on surveillance workloads. It uses conventional magnetic recording and a SATA 6.0 Gb/s interface to sustain high write throughput across multiple camera streams. The 7200 RPM spindle speed supports rapid data access for recording and playback. It is designed for servers, storage systems and camera devices that demand continuous operation.

Upgrade from lower-capacity or archive drives

This drive replaces smaller surveillance drives when retention periods expand or camera counts increase. The jump is worth it when a single volume must hold weeks of high-resolution footage without spanning multiple disks. It also supersedes archive-class drives that cannot sustain the constant write cycles of 24/7 recording. The CMR technology avoids the performance dips associated with shingled recording under heavy sustained loads.

Fits standard 3.5-inch drive bays

Installation requires a 3.5-inch bay, a SATA data cable and a SATA power connection from the host system. The drive frees up controller ports and physical slots by consolidating up to 24 TB into one unit. It works with any backplane or HBA that supports SATA 6.0 Gb/s, letting builders scale storage without adding controllers. No special cooling beyond standard chassis airflow is specified.

Questions about this item

What size drive bay does the 3.5" WD240PURP require?

The WD240PURP fits a standard 3.5-inch internal drive bay and uses the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface for both data and power connections.

Which step is often missed when installing this 24TB SATA drive?

Connect both the SATA data cable to the motherboard and the SATA power cable from the PSU; the drive will not spin up without the power connector.

When should the WD240PURP be replaced in a 7200RPM surveillance array?

Replace the drive if SMART attributes report reallocated sectors, seek errors or if the array controller flags it as degraded.
