Product identity

The Western Digital WD3001BKHG is a 300GB 2.5" SAS internal hard drive spinning at 10000RPM with a 32MB buffer. It is built for enterprise servers and storage arrays that require a 6Gb/s SAS connection. The drive is supplied new and weighs 1.0 pound.

Who this suits and who it does not

This drive suits administrators deploying 2.5-inch bays in SAS backplanes where 10K rotational speed and dual-port connectivity are specified. Buyers who need more capacity or a different interface should look at something else. It is not intended for laptop upgrades or desktop PCs lacking a SAS controller.

Deciding specification

The interface is 2.5" SAS 6Gb/s, which determines whether the drive can connect to the target backplane or controller. Verify that the system supports 6Gb/s SAS before purchase.

Questions about this item

Does the WD3001BKHG need a 6 Gb/s SAS controller to operate?

The drive uses a 2.5" SAS 6Gb/s interface, so a compatible SAS host bus adapter or RAID controller with a matching port is required.

Will the 2.5" form factor fit the same drive bays as my existing 3.5" SAS drives?

The physical size is 2.5 inches, which differs from 3.5-inch bays; a 2.5-to-3.5 adapter bracket is needed to mount it in larger trays.

How can I confirm the WD3001BKHG is running at its rated 10000RPM after installation?

SMART monitoring tools will report the rotational speed as 10000RPM, and benchmark utilities should show sustained throughput consistent with a 10K RPM SAS drive.
