Capacity and interface

The Western Digital WD3001FYYG is a 3 TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive that uses a 6Gb/s SAS interface. It is built for business-critical systems that need sustained throughput and round-the-clock operation.

Suited for multi-drive arrays.

The drive targets storage arrays and servers where vibration tolerance and 24x7 duty cycles matter. It is less appropriate for single-drive desktop boot or gaming workloads that do not require enterprise-grade reliability features.

6Gb/s SAS interface decides compatibility

The drive connects through a 6Gb/s SAS port and requires a controller or backplane that supports this standard. Systems without a SAS host bus adapter cannot use the drive.

Questions about this item

What comes in the box with the WD3001FYYG and do I need to buy cables or a bracket separately?

The drive ships in retail or OEM packaging that may vary; no cables, brackets or screws are included so you must supply a SAS data cable, power connector and 3.5" mounting hardware yourself.

Which capacity version of the RE SAS line should I choose for a 24/7 multi-drive array?

This model is the 3 TB variant; select it when you need 3 TB of 7200 rpm storage with a 32 MB buffer in a 6Gb/s SAS interface for vibration-prone enclosures.

What does the 6Gb/s SAS figure mean for actual throughput inside my server?

The 6Gb/s SAS interface provides a maximum bus rate of 6 Gbit/s; real-world sustained transfer will be limited by the 7200 rpm platters and 32 MB cache rather than the interface ceiling.
