40 GB SATA desktop drive

The Western Digital Caviar SE WD400JD is a 40 GB 3.5 inch internal hard drive with a SATA 3.0Gb/s interface. It spins at 7200 RPM and includes an 8 MB cache for everyday desktop storage tasks. The bare-drive packaging suits system integrators and upgraders fitting a standard drive bay.

Suits legacy builds not high-capacity needs

This drive fits older desktops, DVRs or industrial equipment that require a 3.5 inch SATA drive with modest capacity and cool, quiet operation. Buyers who want more storage space or faster transfer rates should look at something else.

40 GB capacity decides fit

The single specification that determines whether this is the right part is the 40 GB capacity. If the target system or application needs exactly this amount of space the drive matches; otherwise a different capacity is required.

The Caviar SE line is designed for cool operation and highest reliability even in intensely hot environments such as digital video recorders.

How loud is the drive when it runs all day in a desktop?

WhisperDrive technology minimises noise to levels near the threshold of human hearing and SoftSeek streamlines seeking algorithms for quieter operation.

What cables or controller do I need to connect this 3.5" SATA drive?

A standard SATA data cable and a SATA power connector from your power supply are required; the drive uses the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface.
