Capacity and intended use

The WD Blue WD40EZZX is a 4TB desktop hard drive built for everyday computing tasks. It suits users who need large, affordable storage for documents, media libraries and backups. The 5400 RPM spindle and 128MB cache deliver steady throughput for typical workloads. It is not aimed at high-performance gaming or professional video editing that demand faster sustained rates.

Sustained workload behaviour

The drive uses CMR recording technology to maintain consistent write performance across the full 4TB capacity. Its SATA 6.0Gb/s interface handles sequential transfers without the slowdowns seen in shingled designs. The 5400 RPM speed keeps latency predictable during long copy or backup sessions. Heavy random I/O workloads such as database servers will find the mechanical limits restrictive.

Thermals, noise and power

Low power consumption and advanced power management reduce heat output during normal desktop use. The 3.5 inch form factor fits standard drive bays with maximum dimensions of 26.10mm height, 101.60mm width and 147.00mm length. Acoustic levels remain low enough for quiet office or home environments. The drive draws modest current from the 12V and 5V rails without requiring extra cooling.

Questions about this item

How much power and heat does the 5400 RPM WD Blue 4TB produce during all-day operation?

The 5400 RPM speed and advanced power management keep power draw and heat low for continuous daily computing use.

Which SATA cable and 3.5-inch drive bay does my desktop need for this WD40EZZX?

A standard SATA 6.0Gb/s data cable and a 3.5-inch bay with 26.10mm height clearance are required for installation.

Will this CMR 4TB drive work reliably alongside an older SATA 3Gb/s mechanical drive?

Yes, the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface negotiates down to 3Gb/s automatically, so it runs without issues on older controllers.
