Surveillance Storage Drive

The Western Digital WD8001PURP is an 8TB 3.5" internal hard drive built for 24/7 surveillance workloads. It runs at 7200 RPM with a 256MB cache over a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and uses CMR technology. The drive is rated for up to 550TB per year and an MTBF of 2.5 million hours.

Suited For High-Camera-Count Systems

This drive supports up to 64 single-stream HD cameras and handles multiple streams from smart cameras with AllFrame AI technology. It is engineered for always-on AI-enabled recorders, video analytics appliances and deep-learning servers. It is not for buyers who need a desktop storage drive optimised for burst performance or low power idle states.

550TB Annual Workload Rating

The 550TB/year workload rating is the key figure that shows whether this drive matches the write intensity of the target surveillance system. Buyers should compare this rating against the total data their cameras and analytics generate each year to confirm suitability.

Questions about this item

How much power does the 7200 RPM WD Purple Pro draw during continuous 24/7 operation?

The drive is designed for low power consumption across read/write, idle and standby modes while sustaining 24/7 surveillance workloads.

Does the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface require a specific controller or backplane to support 64 cameras?

It connects to any standard SATA 6.0Gb/s port; the 64-camera capability depends on the recorder or server software, not a special controller.

Will the 256 MB cache and CMR recording work with an older DVR that only supports 6 TB drives?

The drive reports 8 TB over SATA, so the DVR must recognise that capacity; cache and CMR are transparent to the host.
