WD Purple Pro 8 TB surveillance drive

The WD Purple Pro WD8002PURP is an 8 TB internal hard drive built for AI-enabled network video recorders and video analytics appliances. Its 3.5 inch form factor and SATA interface suit desktop chassis and dedicated recorder bays. The purple colour identifies the surveillance product line at a glance.

Capacity and sustained write workloads

Eight terabytes provides room for many weeks of multi-stream 4K footage before the oldest clips are overwritten. The 256 MB cache absorbs bursty write traffic from dozens of cameras, keeping frame drops low during motion events. Very large archives or long retention policies will eventually fill the volume and require additional drives.

SATA interface practical limits

The SATA 6 Gb/s link caps sequential throughput well below the drive’s internal media speed, so sustained transfers top out at the bus limit. Random access latency is higher than solid-state media, making the drive unsuitable for boot volumes or database workloads. It is intended for sequential, write-heavy surveillance recording rather than mixed-use desktop tasks.

Questions about this item

Will the WD8002PURP 8 TB SATA drive work in a system that only has older SATA ports?

The drive uses a standard SATA interface so it will connect to any SATA port, though it will run at the speed the port supports.

How can I verify the WD8002PURP is operating correctly after installation?

The drive should appear in BIOS and the OS with its full 8 TB capacity and 256 MB cache, and SMART tools will report normal health attributes.

What comes with the WD8002PURP and what must I source separately?

The OEM package contains the 3.5 in Purple Pro hard drive only; SATA data and power cables, mounting screws and any brackets are not included.
