Purpose-built surveillance storage

The Western Digital WD Purple 8TB drive is engineered for 24/7 video recording in network video recorders and DVRs. It handles the constant write workloads and high stream counts typical of security systems. This drive is not for general desktop storage or boot drives where read-heavy performance matters.

Surveillance-class construction

The bare 3.5 inch mechanism uses tarnish-resistant components rated for elevated heat and vibration inside multi-bay enclosures. TLER and ATA streaming support keep the SATA 6.0Gb/s link stable during continuous capture. It supports workloads up to 180 TB per year across systems with more than 8 bays.

8TB capacity for long retention

The 8TB capacity on a 5400 RPM platform with 128MB cache determines how many days of high-definition footage you can keep before overwriting. Buyers needing faster random access for applications or databases should choose a different drive class.

Questions about this item

What does the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface cap the WD80PURZ at in practice?

The SATA 6.0Gb/s interface limits the WD80PURZ to a maximum theoretical throughput of 6.0Gb/s; real-world sustained transfer rates are lower and depend on the 5400 RPM platters and 128MB cache.

What physical space and mounting does the 3.5-inch WD80PURZ need?

The WD80PURZ is a 3.5-inch drive measuring 147.00mm long, 101.60mm wide and 26.10mm high, so it fits a standard 3.5-inch bay with four side or bottom screw holes.

How is the WD80PURZ installed, and what step do people often miss?

Connect the SATA data cable and SATA power cable, secure the drive with four screws in a 3.5-inch bay, then ensure the NVR or RAID controller has TLER and ATA streaming support enabled for surveillance workloads.
