Cobalt steel jobber drill bit with a 143-degree split point for drilling 1/16-inch holes in hard metals
The Westward 1/16 inch cobalt steel drill bit is designed for users who need a durable fractional inch bit for general purpose drilling. Its split point geometry helps reduce walking on contact, allowing the bit to start accurately without a centre punch. The straw bronze finish identifies the cobalt alloy and provides a degree of surface lubricity during cutting. It suits maintenance technicians, metal fabricators and hobbyists working with stainless steel, titanium and other hard alloys.
The bit has an overall length of 1 7/8 inches with a 7/8 inch flute length, matching the jobber length standard so it fits directly into any 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch drill chuck without adapters. The shank diameter matches the 1/16 inch cutting diameter, keeping the tool concentric through the full depth of cut. Right hand cutting direction works with every conventional corded or cordless drill motor. No through coolant channel is present, so external lubrication or peck drilling clears chips from deep holes.
The conventional 143 degree point angle distributes cutting forces across a broad lip, letting the cobalt substrate resist softening when temperatures rise during sustained drilling in tough metals. Cobalt steel retains hardness at higher temperatures than standard high speed steel, so the bit maintains its edge through repeated holes without frequent resharpening. The split point is not self centring on very hard surfaces, so a centre punch is still advised for critical hole placement.

The 1/16 inch diameter and 7/8 inch flute length concentrate torque on a very small cross-section, so the bit will snap first if feed pressure is not reduced.
The finish helps identify the cobalt grade but does not dissipate heat; without through-coolant the bit will heat up quickly during continuous use.
The shank diameter is 1/16 inch, so the chuck must close down to at least that size.
