Westward 12-Piece Tap and Die Set

This 12-piece set supplies straight-flute taps and matching round dies for cutting UNC threads. It is suited to maintenance technicians and hobbyists who need to create or repair external and internal threads in steel or softer metals.

Capacity covers six UNC sizes from 1/4 In.

Five dies and matching taps handle 1/4 In. -20, 5/16 In. -18, 3/8 In. -16, 7/16 In. -14 and 1/2 In. -13. The carbon-steel tools cut clean threads in mild steel but are not intended for high-volume production or hardened alloys.

Carbon steel construction with round die geometry

Round dies allow use with standard die stocks and permit thread chasing on existing bolts. Straight-flute taps require manual reversal to clear chips, so through-holes and blind holes need careful lubrication and frequent backing out.

Questions about this item

Will the 1/2 In.-13 UNC taps and round dies match the threads on the Grade 5 bolts I already keep in the shop?

Yes — the set includes straight-flute taps and round dies in 1/2 In.-13 UNC, the same coarse-pitch standard used on common Grade 5 hardware.

How can I verify the 12-piece set is cutting clean UNC threads after I set it up?

Cut a test thread in mild steel with the 3/8 In.-16 die, then check the nut engagement; clean, full-form crests on the carbon steel tooling indicate proper operation.

Which thread sizes come in the box and do I need a separate handle or wrench?

The box contains five straight-flute taps and five matching round dies covering 1/4 In.-20, 5/16 In.-18, 3/8 In.-16, 7/16 In.-14 and 1/2 In.-13 UNC; tap wrench and die stock are not included.
