Cobalt HSS lathe tool blank

This Westward tool blank is made from high-speed steel with five percent cobalt for improved wear resistance. The blank measures three-eighths of an inch square by three inches long and features a 15-degree bevel on both right and left faces. It is supplied new and ready for grinding to the required profile.

Machinists needing a cobalt blank for custom

The square cross-section and 15-degree bevel suit general-purpose lathe work where the user grinds their own geometry. Buyers who need a pre-ground tool with a specific chip-breaker or radius should look elsewhere. Those requiring a different shank size, bevel angle, or material grade will not find them in this blank.

Questions about this item

What size tool holder do I need for the 3/8 in blank?

The blank measures 3/8 in wide by 3/8 in high, so a standard 3/8 in square tool post slot or a holder bored for that cross-section will accept it directly.

Can I use this 15° bevel blank on a manual lathe that normally takes zero-rake bits?

Yes. The 15° bevel provides a positive rake that reduces cutting forces on a manual lathe, and the HSS 5% cobalt material handles the intermittent cuts typical of older machines without chipping.
