A 5/16 inch carbide jobber drill bit with a black and gold finish and 118 degree point angle
The Westward 5VPA9 is a 5/16 inch carbide jobber drill bit built for workshops that need reliable hole-making in tough metals. Its 118 degree conventional point starts cleanly without a pilot hole. The bright uncoated surface suits general-purpose machining where coating buildup is unwanted. Decimal equivalent .3125 matches standard fractional sizing.
The straight shank seats in any three-jaw chuck or ER collet sized for 5/16 inch tooling. Jobber length provides enough flute reach for through-holes in plate and bar stock without excessive overhang. Carbide construction resists wear in abrasive alloys that would dull high-speed steel quickly. Non-coolant-through design means external flood or mist cooling must be supplied by the machine.
The bit ships as a single cutting tool ready for immediate use. No driver, case, or lubricant is packaged with it. Operators supply their own coolant strategy and tool-holding hardware. This keeps the purchase focused on the carbide substrate and geometry that determine tool life.

The 118-degree conventional point is a general-purpose geometry; it centres well in mild steel but can walk or dull faster in hardened alloys, so frequent touch-ups may be needed on deep holes.
Carbide conducts heat differently than high-speed steel; the bit will get hot during sustained use, so allow cooling periods and use cutting fluid to manage temperature.
The shank matches the 5/16-inch drill diameter, so any chuck that opens to at least .3125 in will hold it; a 3/8-inch or larger chuck is sufficient.
