This 20ft extension cord connects a J1772 vehicle inlet to an existing charging station when the built-in cable falls short. It is designed for electric-vehicle owners who need extra reach without installing a second station. The cord carries up to 40A at 250V and meets SAE J1772 safety specifications. It is not a charger and cannot supply power on its own.

Practical Limits of the J1772 Interface

The extension adds 20ft of length but does not increase the station’s rated output beyond 40A or 250V. Voltage drop over the added distance may reduce charging speed slightly, especially at the maximum current. The cord must be plugged into a compliant J1772 station; it cannot adapt other connector types or protocols. Outdoor use requires the station and vehicle inlet to be rated for the environment.

Capacity and Headroom

At 40A the cord comfortably handles typical Level 2 home and public stations, delivering up to 9.6 kW when the supply voltage reaches 250V. It runs out of headroom if the vehicle or station requests more than 40A, as the conductors and connectors are not rated higher.
