The WUQ 701K-G kit combines a tone generator and probe to identify individual wires inside bundles, verify circuit continuity, and trace cables through non-conductive barriers such as drywall or wood. Technicians working on voice, data, or video installations use it to locate faults and confirm connections without guesswork.

Limits of Tone-Based Tracing

The probe detects the generator's signal through insulation but cannot penetrate conductive materials or live high-voltage circuits. Background noise is overcome by a warbling tone that remains audible in loud environments, yet the method only reveals the path carrying that specific tone. It does not measure bandwidth, certify cable categories, or diagnose protocol errors.

Installation and Common Pitfalls

The kit includes modular plugs, alligator leads, an RJ11/45 adaptor, and a nylon case, so connection to open wires, jacks, or punch-down blocks is straightforward. A frequent mistake is attaching the generator to an energised pair without verifying voltage first, which can damage the unit. The LED proximity indicator brightens as the probe nears the target pair, reducing false positives in dense bundles.
