3.5-Inch SATA USB 3.0 Enclosure

This aluminium-and-ABS enclosure turns a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive or solid-state drive into a portable USB 3.0 device. It suits anyone who wants to access legacy mechanical disks or modern SSDs on current and older PCs without opening a case.

5 Gbps Theoretical Transfer Rate

The single specification that decides fit is the 5 Gbps USB 3.0 transport interface paired with an internal SATA connector. Drives limited to SATA speeds will saturate this link, while faster internal drives cannot exceed the bus ceiling.

Tool-Less Assembly With Screwdriver Included

A supplied screwdriver secures the drive inside the 185 x 110 x 30 mm shell, and the 12 V 2 A power adapter handles spin-up current. The most common issue is forgetting to connect external power before plugging the USB cable, which leaves the drive undetected.

Questions about this item

What real-world speed can I expect from the 5 Gbps USB 3.0 connection?

The enclosure supports a theoretical maximum of 5 Gbps; actual throughput depends on the installed drive and host controller.

Does the USB 3.0 interface limit the performance of a modern SATA SSD?

USB 3.0 caps at 5 Gbps, which is below the 6 Gbps ceiling of the SATA interface, so a fast SATA SSD will be bottlenecked by the USB link.

Will a standard 3.5-inch drive fit inside the 185 x 110 x 30 mm aluminium-alloy case?

Yes, the internal bay is designed for 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or SSDs and the package includes a screwdriver for securing the drive.
