7-Piece Self-Sharpening Block Set

This Henckels International set supplies seven essential cutting tools for everyday kitchen tasks. The block holds a paring knife, serrated utility knife, prep knife, hollow-edge santoku, chef's knife and kitchen shears. Built-in sharpeners in the block automatically hone straight-edge blades each time they are inserted or removed.

Installation and Common Issues

No assembly is required; simply place each knife in its labelled slot and the sharpening mechanism engages automatically. The only frequent mistake is inserting a serrated blade into a sharpening slot, which can damage both the teeth and the internal ceramic wheels.

Practical Limits of the Self-Sharpening System

The integrated sharpeners maintain a fine edge on straight blades but cannot restore heavily chipped or reprofiled edges. Serrated knives and the included shears receive no sharpening from the block at all. Over time the ceramic wheels wear down and the block does not offer a user-replaceable cartridge.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the self-sharpening block is actually sharpening the 8" Chef's Knife after I set it up?

Each time you insert or remove the straight-edge knives — such as the 8" Chef's Knife, 7" Hollow Edge Santoku, 5.5" Prep Knife or 4" Paring/Utility — the built-in mechanism hones the blade automatically, so the edge feels noticeably sharper on the next cut.

What items come in the 7-piece set and is there anything else I need to buy to start using it?

The box contains the 4" Paring/Utility Knife, 5" Serrated Utility Knife, 5.5" Prep Knife, 7" Hollow Edge Santoku Knife, 8" Chef's Knife, Kitchen Shears and the 6-Slot Self-Sharpening Knife Block; everything needed is included.

The block has six slots but only five knives — which slot should I use for the serrated utility knife versus the straight blades?

Place the 5" Serrated Utility Knife in the non-sharpening slot; the other five knives — 4" Paring/Utility, 5.5" Prep, 7" Hollow Edge Santoku and 8" Chef's — go in the self-sharpening slots that hone them on every insert and removal.
