Bag, basket or fitted mat: where the load will sit
A rooftop cargo bag is a weather-resistant fabric bag rated in cubic feet that folds flat when empty. A basket is an open tray for bulky or muddy gear, which you then net or strap down. Baskets ride on crossbars or rails, as do many bags, so compare the basket's length and width with your rack and add the carrier's own weight to the load against the roof limit. For luggage space inside, cargo mats are cut for one model and year range.
Nets, pads and mats that keep the load from moving
Cargo nets are sold by size, such as 8 by 6.7 feet, with S-hooks or cam buckles; cam buckles hold a tighter line than elastic cords. Roof rack pads cushion a load against the paint or the bars and carry a weight rating. Fitted cargo mats list the exact model and years, and sometimes whether a third row is fitted, because the load floor changes with seating. A raised lip keeps spills in.
Questions about Cargo Carriers, Roof Baskets and Cargo Nets
- Is a rooftop cargo bag really waterproof?
- Coated fabric sheds rain, but water can get in at the zipper. Look for a storm flap that covers it and for welded or sealed seams, and line the bag with a dry sack for anything that must stay dry.
- Will a roof carrier affect fuel use and noise?
- Yes. Anything above the roof adds drag and wind noise, and a tall box or open basket adds more than a low-profile bag. Take it off when you are not using it, and keep the load low and centered.
- What should I check before buying a tonneau cover?
- Bed length comes first, since the same truck is built with short and long beds, followed by make, model and year. Then check the rail style and whether the cover rolls, folds or lifts clear of the bed.
