Motors, drives and the parts around them share this aisle, and a motor is chosen by horsepower, supply voltage, phase and speed. Single-phase motors, such as 115 V or 230 V blower motors, run on household power, while three-phase motors need a three-phase supply or a drive. A variable frequency drive (VFD) controls motor speed by changing the frequency, and its rating has to match the motor: input voltage (115 V, 240 V or 380 to 480 V), phase, and horsepower or current. Some drives accept single-phase input and output three phase to the motor, usually with a derating, so check the maker's notes.
