Inverter size, battery voltage and surge power
An inverter converts battery DC into household AC, and its name carries the key numbers. A model such as 24/800 means a 24 V battery input and 800 VA of output, so the battery bank must be 24 V. Compare continuous power with surge power: motors, compressors and pumps draw several times their running power for a moment at start-up, and the inverter must cover that surge.
Waveform and cables follow. Pure sine wave inverters suit sensitive electronics, motors and audio equipment, while modified sine wave models are simpler and may make some loads noisy or hot. The battery current is the load watts divided by battery volts, plus losses: 800 W on a 12 V battery draws around 70 A, so cables must be thick and short. Cable sets are listed by gauge, such as 6 AWG or 1/0 AWG, and by length; larger current needs lower gauge numbers.
MPPT controllers and DC disconnects: reading 100/50
A solar charge controller such as an MPPT 100/50 states two limits: 100 is the maximum open-circuit voltage of the solar array in volts, and 50 is the maximum charge current into the battery in amps. Cold weather raises panel voltage, so keep the array's cold open-circuit voltage below the controller's limit. The charge current rating applies at the battery side, so a 24 V battery lets the same controller handle about twice the panel power of a 12 V one.
A DC disconnect switch isolates the array or battery for service. It must be rated for DC at the system voltage and current, not just AC, because DC arcs are harder to extinguish. Fit fuses or breakers near the battery on the inverter's cables, sized to the cable and the inverter. Installing battery, inverter and solar equipment is a job for a qualified installer, as battery banks can deliver very high fault currents.
Questions about Power Inverters, Solar Controllers and Cables
- Pure sine wave or modified sine wave inverter?
- Pure sine wave output matches utility power and runs electronics, motors and chargers quietly and efficiently. Modified sine wave is a stepped approximation that is fine for simple resistive loads such as lamps and heaters but can cause buzzing, extra heat or failure in some devices. If in doubt, choose pure sine.
- Can an inverter run a refrigerator or microwave?
- Often yes, if its continuous rating covers the appliance's running watts and its surge rating covers start-up. Compressors surge when they start and microwaves draw more than their cooking power. Check the appliance label, add margin, and make sure the battery bank and cables can supply the current.
- Why do inverter cables need to be thick and short?
- Low-voltage battery circuits carry high current, and thin or long cable wastes power as heat and voltage drop, which can make the inverter shut down. Use the gauge recommended for your inverter's current, keep the cable as short as practical and fit a fuse close to the battery.
