Wet, dry or fine dust: matching the vacuum to the mess

A wet/dry vacuum can pick up liquids as well as debris, but check how the manufacturer wants it set up: some use a foam sleeve for wet pickup and remove the paper filter, and most have a float that cuts off suction when the tank is full. Never vacuum flammable liquids or hot embers. Compact 12 V units suit light jobs, while mains models offer more power and capacity.

Fine dust is the harder case. Drywall, concrete and sanding dust pass through ordinary filters and back into the air. For that, use a fine-dust bag or a HEPA filter, tested to capture at least 99.97 percent of 0.3 micron particles, and keep the seals and hose connections tight. Some hazardous dusts also require a vacuum built and classified for that dust.

Hose diameter, airflow and bag fit

Attachments must match the hose diameter, for example 1-1/4 inch or 2-1/2 inch, and adapters join different sizes at some loss of airflow. Airflow, shown in CFM or liters per minute, moves light debris through a long hose; suction, shown as water lift, lifts heavier material. A motor's wattage tells you what it draws, not how well it cleans, so compare airflow and suction instead.

Filter bags and filters are model-specific. A bag listed for one vacuum may not fit another, so match the model number in the title and keep spares, because a full bag cuts airflow. Kits such as dryer vent cleaners add brushes and attachments that work with a vacuum hose, but only after you confirm the hose connection size.

Questions about Wet/Dry Vacuums, Filters and Attachments

Can any wet/dry vacuum pick up water?
Only models sold as wet/dry. Most want the paper filter removed or replaced with a foam sleeve for liquids, and a float shuts off suction when the tank fills. Empty the tank promptly and let the filter dry before using the vacuum on dust again.
Do I need a HEPA vacuum?
For allergens, lead-paint dust, drywall or concrete dust, a HEPA-rated system with sealed connections is the right choice. For sawdust and general garage debris a standard filter is enough. A HEPA filter in a leaky vacuum still lets dust escape around it.
Why does my vacuum lose suction?
The usual causes are a full or clogged filter or bag, a blocked hose or attachment, a loose lid seal and a full tank with the float closed. Clean or replace the filter first, check the hose with a flashlight, and make sure all connections are tight.
