Resolution, frame rate and field of view that match your use

Resolution alone does not make a good picture; sensor quality, lens and lighting matter more. For calls, 1080p at 30 frames is enough, because most meeting apps send 720p or 1080p anyway. Choose 60 frames for smoother motion when streaming, and only if your room is bright. Field of view sets framing: roughly 65 to 78 degrees suits one person at a desk, while 90 degrees or more fits groups but adds edge distortion. A 4K model mainly gives room to crop and zoom.

Autofocus, sensor and the connector on the cable

Fixed focus is sharp at arm's length and fine for calls. Autofocus helps when you show objects to the camera or move around, and manual focus suits fixed setups. Sensor size and type matter in dim rooms, where small sensors turn grainy. For the connection, USB 2.0 suits 1080p at 30 frames, while 4K or 1080p at 60 usually needs USB 3.0. MIPI CSI cameras connect to single-board computers by ribbon cable and cannot plug into a PC's USB port.

Questions about Webcams and PC Cameras

Is a 4K webcam worth it for video calls?
Usually not for the call itself, because meeting apps compress video to 1080p or lower. A 4K sensor gives a sharper downscaled image and lets you crop in. Good lighting improves a call more than extra resolution.
Do webcams need drivers?
Most USB webcams follow the standard video class and work at once on Windows, macOS and Linux. Extras such as zoom, HDR, tracking or color presets need the maker's software. Check the listing if you need those features.
Why does my webcam image look grainy?
Low light is the usual cause, as the camera raises sensor gain and adds noise. Put a soft light in front of you, avoid a bright window behind you, and set exposure manually if your software allows.
