LED, QLED or OLED: what the label says about the panel
The three labels describe different panel designs. A standard LED TV is an LCD lit by LED backlights. QLED adds a quantum dot layer to that design, which widens color range and raises peak brightness, so it copes well with sunny rooms. OLED pixels light themselves, giving true black and wide viewing angles but usually lower peak brightness. Check the brightness quoted in nits if your room is bright, and look for local dimming on LED models to improve contrast.
Model year matters more here than on most gear. A set tagged 2025 or 2026 carries newer processing, apps and ports than a 2021 model of the same size, and older smart TVs may stop receiving app updates. The year appears in the specs list, so compare it before you compare sizes. Early panels can also be dimmer, so brightness figures are worth comparing across years.
Refresh rate and HDMI ports for consoles, PCs and streamers
Refresh rate is quoted as 60, 120 or 144 Hz. Films and broadcasts look fine at 60 Hz, but a console or PC running 4K at 120 frames per second needs a 120 Hz panel and an HDMI input that accepts it, usually HDMI 2.1, and on some sets only certain ports support it, so read the port labels. Count the devices you will plug in, since HDMI inputs range from two to five. Wi-Fi 5 or newer and Bluetooth help with streaming apps and wireless headphones.
Questions about 4K LED and QLED TVs: Panels, Refresh Rate, Ports
- Is QLED the same as OLED?
- No. QLED is an LED-backlit LCD with a quantum dot layer, while OLED pixels produce their own light. QLED usually reaches higher peak brightness, and OLED produces deeper blacks pixel by pixel. Both can be 4K, so compare room brightness and viewing angle rather than the names.
- Do I need 120 Hz on my TV?
- Only if you play games at high frame rates or want smoother fast motion from compatible sources. Film and broadcast content is made at 24 to 60 frames per second and looks fine at 60 Hz. For a console or PC at 4K 120 fps, check the HDMI input specs too.
- Will a 4K TV make HD content look better?
- Somewhat. The TV upscales lower-resolution video to fill its panel, and good processing makes HD and streaming look cleaner, but it cannot add real detail. Native 4K sources, a fast connection and an HDMI cable rated for the bandwidth give the visible improvement.
