PS2 and PS3 Games and Accessories: What Still Plays

Discs, consoles and what plays on what

Generation is the whole question. PS2 discs run on a PS2 and PS3 games need a PS3. A PS4 or PS5 cannot run PS3 or PS2 discs, and a PS2 cannot read PS3 Blu-ray discs. A few early PS3 models could play PS2 games, but most could not. If you want to play a specific title, check that the console you own is the one named in the Supported platform field.

PS2 games are region-coded, so a disc from another territory will not run on a standard console, while PS3 games are mostly region-free. ESRB ratings from E to M give the age range, and genres such as RPG, Action, Shooter and Music help you filter. Rhythm titles like Rocksmith can need a special cable or instrument, so read what the listing says is included.

Accessories: charge docks, skins and generation mismatches

Accessories are generation-specific. A charge dock fits the controller it was molded for, and a silicone skin made for the newer DualSense pad will not fit the older PS3 controller. Look at the product name for both the controller and the console. Because this category also lists a few games and add-ons for newer PlayStation systems, treat the platform field as the final word.

Questions about PS2 and PS3 Games and Accessories: What Still Plays

Can a PS5 play PS3 or PS2 discs?

No. A PS5 plays PS5 games and most PS4 games, but physical PS3 and PS2 discs are not supported. You need a PS3 or PS2 console, or a re-release made for a newer system.

Are PS2 games region-locked?

Yes, most PS2 discs are coded for their territory, such as North America, Europe or Japan, and a standard console reads only its own region. PS3 games are mostly region-free, which makes imports easier.

Do old PlayStation controllers work on a newer console?

Not usually. PS3 controllers are not supported for games on PS4 or PS5, and the PS4 controller works with PS4 games on a PS5 but not with PS5 games. Match the controller to the console generation named in the listing.
