Controller styles: detachable, clip-on or full-size

Joy-Con are the controllers that come with the standard Switch; they detach and can be shared as two single controllers. Clip-on pads, such as split-style units, attach to the console in handheld mode and give larger, more comfortable grips, but most cannot be used with the console in its dock. Full-size pro-style pads suit TV play, and steering wheels hold a single Joy-Con for racing games. Match the style to how you play.

Compatibility is the trap. The Switch Lite has fixed controls, so clip-on pads and detachable Joy-Con cannot attach to it. Colors and themed editions, such as character versions, change the look only. Wireless pads from other makers may lack motion controls or a headset jack, so check the feature list if a game needs gyro aiming or HD rumble.

Cases and protectors are cut to one console model

Cases are made for the standard Switch, the OLED, the Lite or the Switch 2, and the sizes differ, with screens of about 5.5, 6.2, 7 and 7.9 inches across the family. A hard EVA shell protects against knocks, while soft carry bags are lighter. A case listed for the Lite will not fit the standard model. Check the dimensions, and whether the console fits with a grip attached.

Questions about Switch Controllers, Cases and Add-Ons: Fit Check

Do Joy-Con work on the Switch Lite?
They can pair wirelessly as extra controllers, but they cannot attach to the Lite, which has no rails and fixed built-in controls. Pairing lets another player join, for example in tabletop mode on a stand.
Will a Switch case fit the Switch 2?
Usually not. The Switch 2 has a larger body and screen, so cases and screen protectors made for the earlier models are too small. Look for Switch 2 in the title and compare the listed dimensions.
What do clip-on controller grips add?
They enlarge the handheld grip for comfort and sometimes add a real D-pad. They attach to the console, so most work only in handheld mode and not when the Switch sits in its dock.
