Make sure bars, plates and collars fit each other

Weights have to match the bar. Standard plates have a one-inch hole and fit standard bars, while Olympic plates have a two-inch hole and need an Olympic bar. Collars and clamps hold plates in place and come in the same two sizes. Dumbbells are fixed or adjustable; adjustable sets save floor space and change weight with a dial, pin or spin-lock collar. Materials differ: cast iron is durable, rubber or neoprene coatings protect floors and hands, and plastic shells are bulkier for the same weight.

Benches, racks and ropes: rated loads and room

Benches list a load rating, such as 660 lb, which covers the user plus the weight lifted, along with the number of back positions and whether the seat adjusts. Power racks and pull-up stations list their footprint and height, so measure the ceiling and floor space and allow room to load a bar. Battle ropes come in diameters like 1.5 inches and lengths such as 30, 40 or 50 feet; thicker and longer ropes are harder to swing and need more space. Check the anchor point before choosing one.

Questions about Dumbbells, Benches, Racks and Home Gym Equipment

Fixed or adjustable dumbbells: which should I choose?
Adjustable dumbbells save space and give many weights in one set, but changing weight takes seconds and some mechanisms loosen with rough use. Fixed dumbbells are quicker and sturdier but need a rack and floor space for each pair.
How much weight can a bench hold?
The rating, such as 660 lb, normally includes your body weight plus the weights you press. Allow a margin, and check that the bench has a stable base and a locking back adjustment.
How much ceiling height does a power rack or pull-up bar need?
Measure from the floor to the ceiling and compare it with the rack's listed height, leaving space above for a full pull-up and any overhead press. Low basements and sloped ceilings can be a problem.
