BTU, propane and tank size: how big a flame you can run

Fire pit tables list heat output in BTU, commonly 40,000 to 50,000 in this department, and burn propane from a tank in the base. A standard 20 lb tank holds roughly 430,000 BTU, so at full output it runs eight to ten hours. Higher BTU gives a bigger flame and uses fuel faster, but a 40,000 BTU pit warms an arm's length, not a whole patio. Check the regulator and hose, the burner shape, and whether a lid, glass guard or lava rock is included.

Siting matters as much as output. Keep any open flame well clear of walls, eaves, umbrellas and overhanging branches, use it only outdoors with open air around it, and set it on a level, non-combustible surface. Tank covers are listed here too and should match the tank size and the pit's access panel. MGO, the magnesium oxide board used for some tabletops, resists moisture better than wood, but check the care notes.

Pocket warmers: rechargeable or air-activated?

Small warmers use different power sources. Rechargeable units hold a battery and heat on demand, so check capacity, heat settings and charging port. Air-activated pads heat through a chemical reaction when opened, last several hours and are single-use. Temperature figures in titles, such as 131 degrees F or 42 degrees C, show the surface heat, and lower surface temperatures are gentler on skin. Do not hold a hot warmer against bare skin for long periods.

Questions about Patio Heaters, Fire Pits and Hand Warmers

Can I use a propane fire pit under a covered patio?
Generally no. Propane burns oxygen and produces carbon monoxide, so use it only in open air, well away from a roof, overhangs or walls. Follow the manual's clearances and never run it in a garage, tent or enclosed porch.
What does BTU mean on a patio heater?
BTU is a measure of heat output per hour. A higher number means more heat, but patio heating is also about how it is directed: a tall radiant heater warms people below it, while a fire pit mainly warms those within a few feet.
Do I need a regulator for a propane fire pit?
Yes, propane has to be regulated before it reaches the burner. Most fire pits include a regulator and hose rated for the pit's output; check the listing, and replace worn hoses. Test connections with soapy water, never with a flame.
