Matching shelf depth to what goes on it
Shelf depth decides what fits: about 12 inches suits paperbacks, ornaments and most hardbacks, textbooks and binders, but oversized art books and baskets often need 14 inches or more, and some slim units list a width of 16 inches or less. Check the load rating per shelf, since a row of hardbacks is heavy and long spans bow in the middle over time. Open ladder and etagere shelves feel light in a room, while closed backs and cabinet sections hide clutter. Industrial styles pair a metal frame with wood-effect boards.
Tall units, wall fixings and anchoring
A tall bookcase can tip, especially with children or pets around, so look for a wall anchor kit and fix it into a stud or with an anchor rated for your wall type. Floating wall shelves carry the opposite risk: the load hangs on the brackets and screws, so check the bracket design and weight limit, and use proper plugs in masonry or anchors in drywall. Flat-pack units stay square only if every cam lock is tight and the back panel is fitted. Finish names such as walnut or white describe the surface, not necessarily solid wood.
Questions about Bookcases and Standing Shelves
- How deep should a bookshelf be?
- About 12 inches covers most books, binders and decor, while 14 inches or more suits oversized art books and baskets. Shallower shelves save floor space but cannot take large items, and very deep ones tempt you to stack things two rows deep.
- Do I need to attach a bookcase to the wall?
- Yes for any tall or narrow unit. An anchor strap or bracket into a stud stops it tipping if a child climbs it or the top is loaded unevenly. Use the fixings supplied or ones rated for your wall type.
- How can I stop bookshelves from sagging?
- Keep heavy books near the ends of the shelf where the supports are, choose boards with a thick front edge or a metal reinforcement, and respect the per-shelf load rating. Particle board sags sooner than solid wood or metal when loaded for years.
