A server license is only half of the setup

Server software usually needs two pieces: the server license for the machine and CALs for the people or devices using it. A listing such as '1 Server' covers one server, while a '1 User CAL' covers one person's access. Editions differ in features and limits, and the product line may be Entry Level, Standard Server or High Availability. Match the release year, such as 2019, to the version that your clients and other servers support.

Upgrades, N editions and one-year services

A Home to Pro upgrade needs an existing Home installation, so it will not install on a bare machine. N editions leave out some media features, which matters if you need the media player or related codecs. LTSC releases receive security fixes for a long period without new features, which suits fixed-function machines. Annual licenses, such as an endpoint defense service marked 1Y, stop when the term ends, while perpetual licenses do not.

Questions about Business Application and Server Software Licenses

Do I need a CAL as well as a server license?
Often yes. A server license allows you to run the software, while client access licenses cover the users or devices that connect. Check the vendor's licensing guide for the product and edition you plan to use.
Can an upgrade license install on a new computer?
Only if it already runs a qualifying edition. An upgrade license requires an existing qualifying installation, such as a Home edition, to upgrade from. A bare machine or a new computer without that base needs a full license instead.
What does LTSC mean?
Long-Term Servicing Channel editions receive security updates for an extended period without feature updates. They suit kiosks, medical devices and factory machines that must stay unchanged, rather than everyday office computers.
