Oven-bake, air-dry or never-hardening clay
Clay types behave very differently. Polymer clay stays soft until baked in a home oven at the low temperature set by the maker. Air-dry clay hardens as water evaporates, needs no oven and can crack if it dries too quickly or unevenly. Modeling clay or plasticine is oil-based and never hardens, which suits prototypes and animation but not keepsakes. Natural ceramic clay needs kiln firing, so check before assuming a pottery wheel kit includes everything required.
Finish matters too. Air-dry pieces are usually painted and sealed because they are not waterproof, and a gloss glaze sold with an air-dry clay kit is a coating rather than a kiln glaze. Baked polymer pieces can be sanded and varnished. If a piece will hold water or touch food, do not assume any of these clays are food-safe: look for a statement on the packaging.
Tools, quantities and finishing a piece
Clay is sold from small bars sized for charms and figurines to multi-pound blocks for larger sculpture, so choose the quantity by project size rather than by the size of the pack alone. Basic tool sets with loops, ribbon tools and wooden modeling sticks cover most hand building. Paint and glaze are separate items. Store polymer and modeling clay wrapped and away from heat, and keep air-dry clay sealed so it does not harden before you use it.
Questions about Modeling Clay and Pottery Supplies
- Do I need a kiln for pottery clay?
- Natural ceramic clay does need kiln firing to become hard and durable. Polymer clay bakes in a home oven and air-dry clay hardens on its own, so neither needs a kiln. Check the clay type in the listing before buying glazes or a pottery wheel.
- Why did my air-dry clay crack?
- Cracks usually come from drying too fast or unevenly, or from thick and thin areas in the same piece. Keep thickness even, smooth joins with a little water, dry the piece slowly away from heat, and fill small cracks with fresh clay before painting.
- Can I bake polymer clay in my kitchen oven?
- Yes. Most polymer clays harden in a regular home oven at a low temperature for a time set by the maker, so follow the packaging and use an oven thermometer. Bake in a ventilated kitchen and keep tools and trays for clay only.
