Confirm your Surface model appears in the compatibility list covering Pro 3 through Pro 9, Pro X, Laptop 1 through 5, Laptop Studio, Go 1 through 3 and Book 1 through 3. Ensure the vehicle supplies a stable 12-volt 10-amp input and that the proprietary magnetic connector matches your device charging port.

Suits mobile professionals needing in-car power

Ideal for users who work between sites and must recharge Surface hardware from a vehicle supply. Not suitable for devices requiring 20-volt 3.42-amp or 85-watt input, nor for laptops using USB-C Power Delivery or barrel connectors instead of the Surface proprietary interface.

Questions about this item

What comes in the box with the 1703 car charger?

The package includes the 1703 car charger unit with a 1.2 m DC cable and the magnetic connector for Surface devices.

Which output should I choose for my Surface Pro 7 — 65 W or 85 W?

The 1703 delivers 15 V at 4.5 A for 65 W; the 85 W figure belongs to a different 20 V 3.42 A adapter, so use the 65 W charger for Surface Pro 7.

What does the 65 W rating mean when charging a Surface Laptop 5 in the car?

At 15 V and 4.5 A the charger supplies up to 65 W, matching the original 65 W 15 V 4 A adapter so the laptop charges at full speed while driving.
