Red Polyethylene Film Tape

This 3M 483 tape uses a red polyethylene backing with a single-sided rubber adhesive. It comes in a continuous roll measuring two inches wide by 36 yards long on a three-inch core. The tape is intended for packaging and shipping tasks that require a visible colour-coded seal.

Temperature range and adhesive strength

The tape performs from minus 20 degrees F up to 170 degrees F and meets ASTM G155 Cycle 1, D3330, D3759, D3652 and MIL STD 2041D (SH) standards. It provides an adhesive strength of 12 ounces per inch and a tensile strength of 10 pounds per inch at a thickness of 5.3 mil.

Behaviour under sustained load

With 300 percent elongation the backing stretches significantly before breaking, maintaining seal integrity during prolonged stress. The rubber adhesive holds across the full rated temperature span, resisting creep during extended transit or storage.

Questions about this item

How do I apply the 2 in wide 483 film tape and what step is often missed?

Unroll the polyethylene backing, press the rubber adhesive side firmly onto a clean dry surface, and smooth the full 2 in width to avoid air pockets that weaken the 12 oz/in bond.

What part of the 483 tape will need replacement first during regular use?

The 36 yd roll is consumed as you seal packages; once the continuous polyethylene film runs out, a new roll is required.

What limit appears first when the 483 tape is under sustained load?

The 10 lb-in tensile strength is reached before the 300 percent elongation, so the tape will snap rather than stretch indefinitely.
