Bitrex Fit Testing Kit for Respirators

The 3M FT-30 kit enables qualitative fit testing using Bitrex solution for any particulate respirator or gas and vapour respirator with a particulate prefilter. It is intended for safety managers and occupational health professionals who must verify seal integrity before workers enter hazardous environments. The package includes all components required to perform the test protocol on site.

Included Components and Daily Use

The kit supplies a collar assembly (FT-15), hood (FT-14), two nebulizers (FT-13) with replacement inserts, fit test solution (FT-32) and sensitivity solution (FT-31). A laminated instruction booklet provides guidance in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. These parts let the tester generate a challenge atmosphere inside the hood while the wearer performs prescribed exercises to detect leakage.

Qualitative Method Limitations

Bitrex testing relies on the wearer tasting a bitter agent, so it only confirms an adequate seal at the moment of test. It does not measure numeric fit factors and cannot be used for respirators that require quantitative assessment. Users must follow the exact sensitivity screening and fit test steps; any deviation invalidates the result and the wearer may remain unprotected.
