Mac Pro 2009-2012 DDR3 ECC kit

This 12GB kit contains three 4GB DDR3 1066 ECC UDIMM modules built for Apple Mac Pro towers from early 2009, mid 2010 and mid 2012, plus Xserve units from early 2009. It targets owners of those specific Xeon workstations who need registered ECC reliability at the factory 1.50V voltage. Buyers with later Mac Pro models or non-Apple DDR3 platforms cannot use this kit.

Triple-channel 3 x 4GB layout

The three-module configuration fills one memory channel per processor tray on the supported Mac Pro and Xserve models, enabling triple-channel bandwidth at PC3-8500 speed. Major-brand chips and 2Rx8 rank organisation meet Apple's thermal and timing requirements without extra software or firmware. Systems limited to two modules per tray or requiring registered DIMMs will not benefit from this pack.

Tool-free DIMM installation

Modules slot into the 240-pin UDIMM sockets on the Mac Pro memory riser or Xserve board after removing the side panel or sliding the server tray out. No drivers or BIOS updates are required; the firmware recognises the ECC UDIMM SPD data at boot. Installers who mix these sticks with existing non-ECC or registered memory, or who populate slots in the wrong order, typically see a memory error tone or no POST.

Questions about this item

Will the ECC UDIMM modules need replacement after a certain period?

The 12GB kit uses DDR3 1066 ECC UDIMM modules rated at 1.50V with a 2Rx8 rank. They are tested for reliability and covered by a lifetime warranty, so no scheduled replacement is required under normal operation.

What limit appears first when the memory runs at full speed continuously?

The DDR3 1066 (PC3-8500) speed ceiling is the first bound you reach. The three 4GB modules operate at 1066/1067 MHz, and the memory controller in the compatible Mac Pro and Xserve systems caps bandwidth at that rate.

How much heat and power do the three modules draw all day in a Mac Pro?

Each 4GB module runs at the standard DDR3 1.50V. With three unbuffered ECC UDIMMs installed, total power draw stays within the Mac Pro and Xserve memory-slot limits, and the system's built-in airflow handles the resulting heat without extra cooling.
