A 12 VDC lock-style solenoid with a reversible slanted slug and strong mounting bracket, drawing 650 mA for cabinet or door security
The Adafruit lock-style solenoid is a 12 VDC electromechanical latch for basic cabinets, safes or doors. It ships with a slanted-cut slug that can be rotated in 90-degree increments to suit the door orientation. A sturdy mounting bracket is included for secure installation.
The coil draws 650 mA at 12 V and needs a power transistor plus a flyback diode for safe switching. A supply capable of at least 500 mA surge current is required, so small batteries are unsuitable. The slug retracts when powered, leaving the door free to open.
In the unpowered state the solenoid holds the door locked without consuming energy. Applying 9–12 VDC pulls the slug in; lower voltages produce weaker and slower actuation. The mechanism is designed for intermittent access rather than continuous cycling.

It draws 650 mA at 12 VDC, so the power supply must sustain at least that much.
The coil draws 650 mA at 12 V, generating modest warmth; the mechanical click is brief and there is no fan.
You need a power transistor and a flyback diode; a logic-level MOSFET or Darlington pair driven from your microcontroller works well.
