An 802.11bgn WiFi shield with uFL connector uses the FCC-certified ATWINC1500 module and SPI communication for Arduino-compatible boards
This Adafruit WINC1500 WiFi shield adds 802.11bgn wireless networking to Arduino-compatible boards. It features the FCC-certified ATWINC1500 module from Atmel with SSL support for secure connections. The shield communicates via SPI and uses GPIO pins for control, requiring about six wire connections. It is designed for developers prototyping IoT devices or networked projects.
The bundled Atmel-supplied library works best with SAMD21-based boards such as the Arduino Zero, Metro M0 Express, or M4 variants, as well as the Arduino Mega. It will not function on 328P, 32u4, or attiny-based Arduino boards. This compatibility constraint determines which development platforms can use the shield without additional software effort. The module can be clocked up to 12 MHz for reliable packet streaming.
The single specification that decides suitability is the onboard FCC-certified ATWINC1500 module from Atmel. This component provides 802.11bgn WiFi with integrated SSL support and handles the physical layer and MAC processing. Builders who need a different radio standard, a built-in antenna only, or a module without regulatory certification should select another part.

The FCC-certified ATWINC1500 module runs SSL-supported 802.11bgn WiFi and operated an adafruit.io MQTT demo for a full weekend without hiccups, indicating stable long-term operation.
The SPI interface clocks up to 12 MHz for speedy, reliable packet streaming, so the SPI bus speed is the primary throughput ceiling under continuous load.
The shield ran an adafruit.io MQTT demo for a full weekend straight with no hiccups and no active cooling, showing minimal heat and silent operation during continuous use.
